Alumni News: Fall 2020 Roundup

Hello, Assumption University Greyhounds!

Thomas Wales, Assumption alumnus
Thomas Wales, Ph.D. ’98

It is certainly an amazing time for both alumni and students at Assumption University.

I would like to welcome the Class of 2024 to our Greyhound family. You are all in good hands during this, your first, albeit challenging and non-traditional, year of college. I would also like to welcome the Class of 2020 to our ever-growing alumni network. I know that the last four years have traveled by quickly, but you will always be a Greyhound!

Despite the distancing challenges we face, alumni are still enjoying virtual programming as well as staying connected to the Alumni Relations Office through Facebook, Linkedln, Twitter, and Instagram – these are all great ways to stay informed on what’s happening at Assumption University. In addition, don’t forget that most Assumption clubs and athletic teams have their own social channels – find some of your old favorites and keep in touch!

Please stay tuned as we continue to expand the catalogue of online programming for Ambassadors as well as the greater alumni community. I know that 2020 has been a challenging year for most, if not all of us. However, I hope that each of you can reach back into your memories and find at least one or two Assumption moments that will make you smile from ear to ear. Now is a great time to reach out to old friends and acquaintances.

If you would like to join us as an Ambassador, we are always welcoming new members. If interested, please visit www.assumption.edu/alumni or email us at alumni@assumption.edu to sign up.

Virtual Events Allow Alumni to Stay Connected

Amid the pandemic, the Alumni Relations Office has produced a variety of virtual programming that provides alumni with ample opportunities to connect. Through a collaboration with the Alumni Ambassador group, alumni performers, lecturers, and campus partners, and by continuously adding new events to the online calendar, a full slate of programs has been offered to alumni. From virtual webinars and panels to live performances on social media platforms and online trivia games, there are plenty of ways to stay connected to the Greyhound community.

Have an idea for programming? Please send an email to alumni@assumption.edu. We hope to “see” you soon at one of our events or programs, which can be found by visiting asumption.edu/alumni/events.

Cyber Threats and the 2020 Election

In October, Jim Trainor ’87, former top FBI cyber expert and current senior vice president for Aon’s Cyber Solutions Group, and Hank Naughton, JD’82, Massachusetts state representative and house chairman of the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security, presented a program co-sponsored by the Alumni Relations Office and the Center for Cybersecurity, “Cyber Threats and the 2020 Election.” Jonathan Reiber, former Pentagon chief strategy officer for cyber policy and current senior director of cyber strategy and policy at AttackIQ, also served as a panelist. The panel engaged in a timely discussion on how foreign governments may influence the outcome of the 2020 Presidential election.

(Virtual) Reunion 2020

Each year, the Alumni Relations Office looks forward to honoring alumni and celebrating milestone moments. While it was disappointing that Reunion 2020, a salute for the classes ending in “0” and “5,” was not able to take place in late May as planned, Reunion moved from Salisbury Street to Zoom. The Virtual Reunion featured a presentation by President Francesco C. Cesareo, Ph.D., entitled “What Does Assumption’s Future Look Like?”; a video, “Assumption Alumni Impacting Worcester’s Renaissance,” which highlighted the work of alumni who have contributed to the revitalization of the city and information about the University’s partnership with the Worcester Red Sox; a special segment called “Looking Back with Larry,” which featured conversations with longtime and recently retired Assumption librarian Larry Spongberg HA’99; and a live game of Assumption Trivia, packing in fun for alumni of all classes.
